Sber, Russia’s largest bank, is set to expand its crypto-backed lending offerings by accepting Tether’s USDT stablecoin and Ether as loan collateral, alongside Bitcoin. The move comes as Russia’s new crypto regulatory framework takes shape, with Sberbank crypto loans becoming a key part of the bank’s digital asset strategy.

Expanding Collateral Options for Sberbank Crypto Loans

Deputy Chairman Anatoly Popov confirmed that Sber will adapt its existing products and gradually expand its offerings as Russia’s regulated crypto market launches. The bank plans to add USDT and Ether as collateral options after the Bank of Russia permits them for public trading. This phased approach allows Sberbank crypto loans to grow in line with regulatory approvals rather than rushing ahead of official guidance.

Russia’s New Crypto Framework and Central Bank Approval

Russia’s regulated crypto market officially launched under a law signed by President Vladimir Putin on August 4, with core provisions taking effect September 1. The Bank of Russia holds authority over which crypto assets can trade on regulated exchanges. On August 11, the central bank proposed Bitcoin, Ether, and USDT for regulated exchange trading, citing their substantial market capitalization, trading volume, and at least five years of price history on overseas markets.

Meanwhile, Sber has taken a cautious stance on Russia’s central bank digital currency (CBDC), the digital ruble. The bank’s chief financial officer reported seeing little evidence of broad demand for the CBDC among retail, corporate, or financial institution clients.
