Motorola Previews Android 15 Update and New Themed Icons
Motorola is finally bringing its Motorola Android update to version 17, and the company has detailed what’s new on its support portal. The standout feature is the long-overdue adoption of themed icons—a capability Google has offered since Android 12, but which existing Motorola devices like the latest Razr foldables have lacked until now.
Themed Icons and Home Screen Customization in the Motorola Android Update
The new Motorola Android update introduces a dedicated “Themed icons” section in Home settings, letting you apply an icon theme that coordinates with your overall phone theme. Simply touch and hold a blank space on your home screen, then tap Home settings to access the feature. Alongside themed icons, the update brings stackable widgets—you can now combine multiple widgets into a single block and swipe between them, saving precious home screen real estate. If you use Classic style for quick settings, you’ll also gain the ability to hide labels on settings tiles to free up even more space.
Enhanced Notifications and Display Features
Beyond visual tweaks, the Motorola Android update refines how your phone handles information. Live updates now let apps display real-time, ongoing data in your status bar or notifications without bombarding you with multiple alerts. Notification summaries give you one-sentence previews of lengthy group chats or rapid-fire threads from messaging apps like WhatsApp or Messages. The system also uses machine learning to organize notifications, separating personal messages from clutter and automated alerts into quiet folders. For content creators and media enthusiasts, Enhanced HDR brightness automatically maximizes display brightness when viewing HDR content—whether that’s Ultra HDR photos in Google Photos, HDR videos on YouTube, or HDR feeds on Instagram. You can adjust the intensity or disable it entirely for a more comfortable viewing experience.
Motorola hasn’t announced a rollout timeline yet, though flagship devices like the Razr flip phones and Razr Fold will likely arrive first, followed by Moto G and Edge lineups. As covered earlier, Samsung rolls out One UI 9 beta 6 for Galaxy S26 series shows how other manufacturers are also advancing their update strategies. Meanwhile, The Era of Cheap Smartphones Is Over as Price Hikes Become Permanent underscores why timely software support matters more than ever in today’s market.
