Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra Becomes World’s Most Popular Android Phone

Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra has achieved a rare milestone in the smartphone market: it’s become the world’s best-selling Android phone globally in Q2 2026. While Android phones rarely claim the top spot overall—that honour typically goes to iPhones—having an ultra-premium Android device lead Android sales during a June quarter marks a significant shift in the market. Galaxy S26 Ultra sales demonstrate Samsung’s renewed push toward high-end devices rather than relying on budget models to drive volume.

Breaking the Android sales pattern

According to Counterpoint Research, the top-selling smartphones in Q2 2026 still feature three iPhones at the peak: the base iPhone 17 leads, followed by two iPhone 17 Pro variants. However, the real story is what comes next. The Galaxy S26 Ultra claimed the fourth position globally—a dramatic change from a year earlier, when the Galaxy S25 Ultra barely made the top 10. This time, Samsung’s flagship beat out budget-focused models like the Galaxy A07 and A17, which traditionally dominate Android sales charts.

The timing of the launch played a crucial role in Galaxy S26 Ultra sales performance. The Galaxy S26 series launched in late February, but the Ultra model didn’t appear in Q1’s best-seller rankings. This means the vast majority of its sales momentum came after the initial launch window, carrying into Q2. Counterpoint notes that the Galaxy S26 Ultra accounted for more than half of the entire Galaxy S26 series’ sales, underscoring strong consumer demand for the premium variant.

What drove Galaxy S26 Ultra sales

Samsung’s success with the Galaxy S26 Ultra reflects a deliberate strategic shift. The company has increased its focus on flagship smartphones, boosting promotions and allocating resources strategically to offset revenue pressures amid rising costs. Key differentiators include an industry-first privacy display and enhanced AI capabilities that set the device apart from competitors. Rather than chasing volume through budget segments, Samsung doubled down on premium positioning—and the market responded. Galaxy S26 Ultra sales figures suggest consumers are willing to invest in high-end Android devices when they offer genuine innovation and differentiation.
