Google Adds Health Guardian to Fitbit Air and Edge, Expands Auto Activity Tracking
Google is rolling out new Health Guardian features for the Fitbit Air and Fitbit Edge, giving wearers monthly summaries of their blood pressure and insulin resistance trends right inside the Health app. The update also brings smarter automatic activity tracking to Fitbit and Pixel devices, plus a new metal mesh band option for the Fitbit Air.
What does Fitbit Health Guardian actually track?
With Fitbit Health Guardian, users get a monthly rundown of blood pressure and insulin resistance patterns, paired with recommendations from the in-app Health Coach. The idea is to flag early warning signs before they become bigger problems. “Health Guardian features give you this early indication that something needs attention, kind of like a check engine light for overall well-being,” Google says. The feature also gives users talking points for their next doctor’s visit.

This builds on the Google Health app, which replaced the old Fitbit app a few months ago and now acts as a central hub for fitness, sleep, and medical record data. The app already connects with outside services like Peloton and MyFitnessPal, and Google has partnered with medtech company Abbott to bring its Lingo continuous glucose monitor into the app for U.S. users soon.
Smarter workout detection and a new band
Alongside Health Guardian, Google says it’s fixing a long-standing weak spot: automatic detection of fast-moving workouts like tennis and HIIT. The update factors in movement, routines, manual edits, and location data on top of heart rate to get a clearer read on what you’re doing. Google claims the changes “cut missed workouts by more than half” in testing. That kind of under-the-hood refinement echoes the pattern Motorola Previews Android 15 Update and New Themed Icons described with recent software tweaks aimed at better accuracy rather than flashy new hardware.
Google is also giving the Fitbit Air a style upgrade with a new stainless steel Metal Mesh band, available in Champagne Gold or Polished Silver for $70. Shoppers can also grab the Champagne Gold band bundled with an Obsidian Fitbit Air for $150 at Target and the Google Store. Pre-orders open next week, with the band arriving on October 27.
