Privacy-Focused AI Assistant Ollie Is Shutting Down in a Week
The Ollie team has announced that the privacy-focused Ollie AI assistant will shut down on November 6, one week after co-founder and CEO Bill Lennon shared the news on X on Friday.
What the Ollie AI assistant offered families
Ollie was built to help families stay connected and organized. The app connected to a user’s email and calendar and included tools for appointment bookings, meal planning, and bill payments. The company had also planned to move into household budgeting down the road. It worked on a subscription model.
Privacy was the core pitch. Ollie was one of the first mainstream apps to achieve SOC 2, a privacy compliance standard that companies earn through an independent audit. The startup also raised a $7.5 million seed round led by Khosla Ventures, which it discussed with TechCrunch in September.
That kind of privacy work doesn’t always pay off in tech. Many new digital assistants raise their own privacy questions for users, as companies like Instinct have shown. Elsewhere in AI, Google AI Mode adds flight price tracking and hotel booking tools shows how fast big players keep adding features to their assistants.
Why the Ollie AI assistant couldn’t keep up
Lennon said the pressure of the fast-growing AI industry took its toll. “We got close, but ultimately couldn’t keep up,” he said. With Muse, Instinct, and others entering the space, it became harder to stand out, grow, and raise the capital the company needed. Text-based AI assistants have exploded over the past year, because the more powerful models behind them have made them far more useful for daily tasks.
Lennon also looked back with pride. “We built an incredible personal assistant with a small team, and learned a ton,” he said, thanking the team, users, investors, and supporters.
For current users, the next steps are straightforward. Customers will receive instructions in the coming days on how to export their data and get refunds. If you rely on Ollie for family scheduling or bill reminders, plan to move that information elsewhere before November 6.
